Guide to Summer Skincare

Guide to Summer Skincare

It’s summer! Of course we all want to be outside and soak up as many of the sun’s rays as possible, but we want to make sure we minimize sun damage. Skincare should change seasonally, so let’s talk about changes you need to make for the summer.

SPF

Wear sunscreen. I can’t stress this enough. Sunscreen helps lower risk of skin cancer, aging, wrinkles, and dark spots. Remember, sunscreen needs to be reapplied every couple of hours (and make sure it’s the last step of your routine). Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF30 or higher. Make sure you apply evenly on your face, neck, ears, lips, and full body.

Skincare Routine

My skincare routine during the summer is much lighter than during the winter months. I swap out both my moisturizer and cleanser for a lighter one, usually foam. My moisturizer also contains SPF in the formula for a little extra sun protection. I also like using a vitamin C serum, which prevents hyperpigmentation. This should be layered in between your cleanser and moisturizer.

Exfoliate

Remember to exfoliate once a week, especially if you have oily skin. During the summer, I like using alpha-hydroxy-acid (AHA) pads to gently rub all over my face. After exfoliating, I like to use sheet masks to help lock in moisture.

Hydration

Drink extra water throughout the day, especially if you are active or frequently out in the sun. Dehydration shows in many forms such as dry, itchy skin, muscle cramps, and dizziness. If you are out in the sun a lot, make sure you have enough electrolytes. Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge – think sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, and phosphate. They help balance water in your body, maintain your pH level, move nutrients and waste in your cells, and make sure your nerves, heart, and muscle work as they should. You can find electrolyte tablets or individually packaged powder sticks that you can dissolve into water.

To keep your skin looking nourished and healthy during the summer, add collagen into your diet. NeoraFit’s Slim + Skin Collagen Powder is packaged in individual sticks. I carry a water bottle with me at all times, so I add the collagen powder to my first full 16oz of water first thing in the morning. Remember, it’s hard to over-hydrate! Sip that water throughout the day.

Enjoy summer and be safe!!
