Two rival cultures?
Synopsis
The information era revolution has influenced not only the technology and the economy, but also the social, psychological and cultural aspects of our society. There are two different ways in which people do technology, forming two different cultures, representing opposite communities and rival powers. The high-tech approach, usually associated with money driven big corporate organizations like IBM or Microsoft. The low-tech style represented by hackers, unix freaks and garage start-ups, traditionally driven by ideology of free information and ethics in the progress of technology.
The Internet was brought up by the low-tech people, and so evolved its underground nature of freedom and anarchy.
Some fear that this trend will change when the net gets commercialized, i.e. high-tech and high-money people get involved with making it. These fears started to seem true when Microsoft and other giants entered the game, but other symptoms of governmental and private behavior give one some additional insights.
